Finding Aid

The Pulaski County Health Association was organized May 28, 1919 as an affiliate of the Arkansas Tuberculosis Association, which was sponsored by the Pulaski County Medical Society. At a meeting on June 6, 1921, the Pulaski County Health Association’s members voted to change its name to Pulaski County Tuberculosis Association.

The organization was an agency of the Community Chest, which provided about half its operating budget. The rest was raised through the sale of Christmas seals. The Pulaski County Tuberculosis Association conducted educational programs on prevention in the public schools and administered skin tests in schools, clinics, and other locations. The association had nurses who visited in the homes of patients. It also opened a rehabilitation “camp” for recovering tuberculosis patients. This was located on Twelfth Street Pike, in a building which had formerly housed the State Reform School.

This small collection contains minutes of the Pulaski County Tuberculosis Association meetings from 1919-1929. Also included are obituaries for Mrs. Jane Younts, long-time director of the association.
