Radio CALS - August 5, 2016

  • Selections from a panel discussion about the transformation of Arkansas politics in the 1970s, co-hosted by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies and the Clinton School of Public Service on July 8. The conversation included Senator David Pryor, journalist Ernie Dumas, ex-Dale Bumpers staffer Archie Schaffer, and political columnist John Brummett.
  • An interview with Ketina Taylor, of the National Archives & Records Administration in Fort Worth, conducted by Rhonda Stewart, the Butler Center's genealogy expert; Taylor was the speaker at the Butler Center's Genealogy Workshop 2016, held earlier this summer
  • Selections from a CALS Con discussion of Star Wars; CALS Con is the library system's free annual celebration of all things fandom
  • "Talking About Books": Quick reviews of books about the Olympics, provided by Ellen Bard, CALS staff member
  • Chewing the Fat with Rex and Paul, who discuss the 100th birthday party of attorney David Solomon in Helena (not forgetting to mention the lunch they enjoyed at Craig's Bar-B-Que in DeValls Bluff before the party), houseboats on the White River, former U.S. congressman Ed Bethune's latest book and Bethune's special relationship with Pocahontas, the button industry of yore and the mounds of stamped out mussel shells left behind, Biscuit Row, new restaurants and other improvements in Helena, the remarkable Solomon family, notable guests of David Solomon's birthday party including Dick Hatfield, other famous people from Helena including seven Civil War generals, the beautiful historical interpretation at Battery C in Helena, the surprising nature of Crowley's Ridge geography, and much more
  • Music from the Butler Center's Arkansas Sounds music collection
