William D. Downs Jr. will discuss his latest book, Stories of Survival: Arkansas Farmers During the Great Depression. The book is an oral history compilation of dozens of in-depth interviews with survivors of the 20th century’s most severe economic downturn. Downs is professor emeritus of mass communications at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he served as chair of the department for more than 40 years. A graduate of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, he later received an MA and PhD from the University of Missouri–Columbia. He was born in Calico Rock, Arkansas, in 1932, which has been identified as the worst year of the Depression.
