Featured Arkansas Artist: Angela D. Davis

The Arkansas Studies Institute houses four art galleries, including a retail gallery, featuring the work of Arkansas artists and art related to the state. This post is part of a bi-weekly series featuring ASI gallery artists.

Angela D. Davis
Biography
Angela D. Davis was born in Orlando, Florida, and has lived in several states. She now resides in Lambrook, Arkansas, where she produces her art. As a youth, she won numerous art contests in Norfolk, Virginia, including an international award for which she placed in the top twenty in the world.
Since that time, this self-taught artist has studied the masters, especially the individualist fantasy artists of the 1930s. Her preferred medium is oil paint, but she also executes her vision in oil, pastel, collage, watercolor, and mixed media. She was recently featured in a solo show at Hendrix Gallery in Helena, Arkansas. Her works can be found in private collections throughout the United States.

Artist Statement
cyclical-headed people:
think-heads are souls revealed. they are the obscure made visible. they are weakness and fear, courage and beauty personified. they are real. my think-heads, quoting from georgia o’keefe are “often the most definite form for the intangible thing in myself i can only paint.”
i created them out of a need to see a situation beyond simple representation. i wanted to explore the unseen and allow those viewing my work to do the same through my vision. i like for their emotions to emanate from them by using color and movement. the color of their bodies and faces means more than aesthetic. each color represents a specific meaning depending on the piece. blue usually indicates freedom, red passion, and so forth and so on.
