Event Reminder: Legacies and Lunch, September 2

George Lankford author of Surprised by Death: A Novel of Arkansas in the 1840s
Wednesday, September 2, 2009, noon to 1 p.m.
Darragh Center - Main Library

In Surprised by Death, author George Lankford evokes the essence of Arkansas in its early years of statehood through this novel based on the real-life unsolved 1841 murder of young Nick Burton and the subsequent manhunt in the Batesville area.

Blood feuds and vengeful posses blend with larger political and economic concerns emerging from a national financial panic, sparked in part by the failure of the Arkansas State Bank.

Lankford, who has a deep knowledge of Arkansas in the nineteenth century, uses the story of this murder as a window on the Arkansas frontier and offers an intriguing tale populated with some of the most famous and notorious figures from Arkansas’s past.

Join us at Legacies & Lunch when George Lankford discusses his novel and the process of turning history into fiction. Surprised by Death, published by Butler Center Books, will be for sale at the event, and the author will be signing copies after the discussion.

Bring a sack lunch; drinks and dessert provided.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 501-320-5717 or visit www.butlercenter.org
