Women's Educational Aid Society (Little Rock, Ark)

The Women’s Educational Aid Society was organized in Little Rock in 1887. According to the organization’s constitution, the “object of this Society is to assist worthy young unmarried women to obtain an education.”


Membership was limited to fifty, with a waiting list of three women and annual dues of $2 each. Women whose father, husband, or brother was "connected with the liquor traffic” were not eligible for membership.


From October to June, the Society met every other Wednesday for business and a program. Below are some examples of the types of programs at club meetings taken from the 1924-1925 Society yearbook. Click on the images to view a larger version.

Eberts Training Field (Lonoke, Arkansas)

Eberts Training Field was established near Lonoke in 1917 and was a leading training center for aviators during World War I. Cadets started to arrive in March of 1918, but the war ended in November of 1918 before the first graduating class made it through the program.

John Deering, Chief Editorial Cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will discuss the history and importance of cartoons created by George Fisher. Fisher was a political cartoonist for more than 50 years whose work influenced and helped define Arkansas politics for a generation.

Featured Manuscript Collection: November/December

Korean War Service: 19th Regiment, 21st Infantry Division, U.S. Army, 1950-1951

John Herman “Jack” Baird, Jr. was born in New York in 1922. He served in World War II for three years stationed on an island off the coast of Panama. Baird remained in the Inactive Reserves after returning to the states and completed law school at the University of Mississippi on the G.I. Bill in January of 1950. Recalled to active duty on September 22, 1950, Baird served in the Korean War for one year and two months beginning in September of 1950 with the 19th Regiment of the 21st Infantry Division. After the war, Baird settled in Little Rock, Arkansas. He currently lives in San Rafael, California.

The Baird Collection contains biographical images, military documents, correspondence, and newspaper clippings related to the Korean War, including copies of Baird’s Medical Clearance Certificate from October 18, 1951 and his Camera Pass for Pearl Harbor Naval Reservation from November 7, 1951. In addition to the documents, the Baird Collection contains 217 photographs.
